15 Transport (Cooper Street)

15.1 Prestarts & Maintenance – All plant and heavy vehicles must have a daily inspection (Pre-start). This is to be conducted by the driver or maintenance manager and recorded to certify that the checks have been done, and the vehicle is considered safe to operate. Any faults identified that are considered serious, that are safety related, or may influence animal welfare need to be communicated to the supervisor or manager before operating the vehicle. The driver is ultimately responsible for the driving safety of the vehicle, so they must be satisfied that any repairs needed have been completed.  If any driver is not satisfied that the vehicle is completely safe, they must refuse to operate the vehicle and communicate their concerns to senior management.

15.2 NHVR/Fatigue Management – Some applications will require Mass management compliance, such as PBS operations and Hay cartage. All employees operating these vehicles are responsible in the execution and compliance of Mass Management. It is a legal requirement that employers file a copy of all driver Work diary sheets (yellow copy). Due to this requirement, all drivers are to hand in the completed yellow copies of their work diary each week.

15.3 Traffic Flow – There is no entry permitted via the front entry on Cooper Street.  The traffic for heavy vehicles flows from the rear entry, accessed from Robson Street to the front of the site, exiting onto Cooper Street.

15.4 Access & Parking – Visitors are required to report to the General Office on arrival and must be accompanied by a Midfield Representative whist onsite. Access to the site requires Hi Visibility PPE in the workshop and truck yard.  Short Term visitor and staff parking is available outside the main office.  Further staff parking is available inside the east fence line (Cooper St End)  All parking is required to be in the designated areas to minimise any obstructions to truck movements.

15.5 Truck and Trailor Parking – B-Double trailor parking is on the west boundary (Robson St end) Semi Trailor’s are angle parked along the south boundary. Designated trailor parking spaces are identified by yellow painted IBCs.

16 Hide Shed

16.1 Site Entry & Exit – Vehicles:

  • A 10kmph speed limit must be observed on site.
  • Traffic to entry site via Gate 5
  • Traffic to exit shed and site via Gate 6, onto Strong Street.
  • Employees and Visitors must park in the designated parking area, located along the fence line between Gate 5 and the office.
  • Visitors must report to the office upon arrival.
  • The site has a large forklift working area and pedestrians are required to use the defined pathways and entrance to the office and shed.
  • No pedestrian access is permitted through Gate 6.

16.2 Employees, Contractors and Visitors –

  • All visitors and contractors are required to complete an on-line induction before entering the site.
  • Any visitors who have not completed an on-line induction must be accompanied by a Midfield Representative at all times.
  • Employees and Authorised Visitors are to enter the site from Gate 5 only.
  • Employees and visitor parking at the site must use designated walkway for access to the office and shed.
  • All visitors are to report to the office upon arrival.

16.3 Skid Shed Forklifts – Removing Pallets from the Hide Classing Area:
The use of bollards and ropes ensure the separation of employees and forklifts in the hide classing area.  To maintain a safe working environment, the following procedure must be complied with in the following situations:

  • Moving completed pallets of hide in & out of the classing area: Before any completed pallets of hides are moved, a safety rope and bollards are used to separate pedestrians from the operating forklift.
  • Moving pallets on the Western Side of the Classing Area: The inside safety rope is strung from the corner of the hide classing chain support to the bollard at the western end of the Classing Area, creating an exclusion zone.  The forklift operator is to ensure that there are no employees inside the exclusion zone before removing the outside safety rope and ensuring safe removal of the pallet.  The forklift operator must replace the outside safety rope after removing the pallet.  Only then are employees safe to remove the inside safety rope and bollards and can recommence work.
  • Moving pallets in the Northern and Eastern end of the Classing Area:  The inside safety rope is strung from the Eastern Wall to the bollard of the Western Side of the Classing Area, creating an exclusion zone.  The forklift operator is to ensure that there are no employees inside the exclusion zone before removing the outside safety rope and ensuring safe removal of the pallet.  The forklift operator must replace the outside safety rope after removing the pallet.  Only then are employees safe to remove the inside safety rope and bollards and can recommence work.

17 Bus Services

17.1 Bus Site Access – Entry and to the site will be via Gate 4. A No-Parking Zone has been established directly in front of the bus shelter, so access to drop off/pick up zones should always be unimpeded.

17.2 Bus Stop – Several bus services are provided for Midfield employees daily.  Employees utilising the bus service will enter the shelter, located at the rear of the Maintenance Shed/Protein Plant, through the back door against the building. Passengers must wait for their bus inside the shelter or behind the chains and bollards and are not to be wondering around the area.  The area in front of the bus shelter is a no parking zone to allow access for the buses.

18 Meat Barn

18.1 Customer Parking – Customers of Meatbarn have access to carparking to the south of the building. No employee parking is permitted in the customer carpark. Disabled parking and Parents with Prams parking are located conveniently close to the front entrance. There is no street parking permitted. It is a no standing zone directly in front of the building. Midfield staff seeking pedestrian access to Meatbarn should use the path between the staff carpark or the sealed walkway located at the front of the building. Take care while crossing the road or customer carpark entrance.

18.2 Staff Parking – The onsite carparks are reserved for Meatbarn customers only and staff must use the staff neighbouring staff carpark for their personal vehicles.

18.3 Loading Zone – Meatbarn delivery vehicles are loaded near the side door located in the customer carpark. Drivers and workers need to take care when customers are in the area. The use of trolleys and trolley jacks is limited to the traffic island area only and operations should cease if customers enter the area.

18.4 Incoming Deliveries (Loading Dock) – Outgoing and Incoming stock is managed via the loading dock. This is a no pedestrian area. Only operators who have completed the required training are permitted to be in the area during loading or unloading activities.

19 Staff Car Parking Areas

Staff carparking is available in two locations:

  1. Opposite gate 1, across McMeekin Road is accessed from Albert Street.
  2. Scott Street. Opposite the main Midfield Site.

Ensure cars are parked in the designated car parks and the correct entry and exits routes are observed. Always use correct pedestrian crossings to negotiate McMeekin Road.  Care should always be taken while crossing Scott Street. Always try to wear Hi Vis or bright clothes during dark hours. There are Hi Vis, reflective sashes available to any staff who wishes to use them.  There are several reserved or no parking areas within the Scott St carpark. Always observe the direction of signage that is displayed.
